Medewi vs Canggu: Where Should You Learn to Surf in Bali?

Full disclosure: we run a surfhouse in Medewi, so you can guess where this ends. But we’ve surfed Canggu plenty, we send guests there for nightlife weekends, and the honest answer to “where should I learn to surf in Bali?” is more nuanced than either camp’s marketing. Here’s the comparison we give friends.

The waves

Canggu is a stretch of beach breaks and a few reefs — Batu Bolong’s soft rollers are genuinely good for first lessons, and there’s always somewhere to whitewater-push a beginner. But beach breaks shift, close out and punish inconsistently, and the step from whitewater to green waves happens in a lineup with hundreds of other surfers having the same idea.

Medewi is one long, slow left-hand point wave that breaks the same way, in the same place, every set. For your very first waves that makes little difference — whitewater is whitewater. For your first green waves and everything after, it changes everything: a predictable takeoff spot, a wall that holds up long enough to actually turn on, and the same wave again and again until your body learns it.

The crowd math

This is the part nobody puts on Instagram. Your progression is measured in waves caught, not hours floating. In Canggu’s beginner lineups you’re competing for scraps with surf schools stacked shoulder to shoulder; two waves in an hour can be a decent session. At Medewi — especially on the inside, at the right tide — a coached beginner can catch more waves in one morning than in several days down south. Multiply that by a week and the gap is absurd.

Coaching quality

Canggu has hundreds of instructors. Some are excellent. Many are a guy with a rashvest pushing eight tourists into whitewater on rotation. It’s a lottery, and the good ones are booked out.

Coming from Canggu’s beach breaks, the wave itself will feel different too. Here is what changes, and why Medewi is a forgiving place to find out: your first point break.

Medewi took a different path: since early 2026, local rules (set by the Medewi Board Riders with the village) require beginners to surf with a registered instructor, cap lessons at two students per instructor, and keep learners on the inside section away from boats and the main lineup. Whatever you think of rules in surfing, the effect is real: small, supervised, personal lessons are now the only kind that exist here. (Ours have always been private with video analysis — the rules basically standardised what we already did.)

Lifestyle: be honest with yourself

Canggu is a town that happens to have surf: specialty coffee, gyms, coworking, beach clubs, traffic, nightlife until sunrise. If that energy is half the reason you’re coming to Bali, you will love it — and there’s zero shame in that.

Medewi is a fishing village that happens to have a world-class wave: warungs, rice fields, kids playing on the beach, dinners that end by ten because everyone’s surfing at six. Your evenings are quieter; your mornings are the point. People who come here for a week tend to describe it afterwards as the actual holiday.

Cost

Everything in Canggu — rooms, food, lessons, scooters — carries a South Bali premium these days. West Bali still runs on village prices. We won’t pretend the difference pays for your flights, but over a one- or two-week surf trip it’s very noticeable, and what you get for it (wave count, personal coaching) is the opposite of a downgrade.

The honest verdict

  • Never touched a board, in Bali for 3 days, want brunch and a party? Take a lesson at Batu Bolong. Genuinely fine choice.
  • Want to actually learn — stand up, ride green waves, come home a surfer? Medewi, and it isn’t close. The wave is built for it, the crowd math works for you, and the 2:1 coaching rules protect your progress.
  • Already surfing and stuck on a plateau? A week of long left walls with video-analysis coaching will do what a month of Canggu closeouts won’t.

Still torn? Do both: learn out west, party down south on your last weekend. If you want the Medewi half planned properly — coaching, boards, room, pickup — start here or read our complete Medewi surf guide first.
