Medewi’s best feature — being far from the crowds — comes with one honest catch: you have to get here. The good news is that the journey is simpler than most first-timers expect, the coast road is genuinely scenic, and once you’ve arrived you’ll understand why the extra hours in the car are the best filter West Bali has. Here’s how it works.
The short version
- From Bali airport (Denpasar/Ngurah Rai): roughly 2.5–3.5 hours by car, depending on traffic around Denpasar and Tabanan.
- From Canggu: around 2–2.5 hours.
- Best option: a private transfer arranged in advance. If you’re coming to surf with us, coaching guests get pickup included — just send us your flight details.
The route: one road, west along the coast
There’s essentially one way to Medewi: the main coast road that runs from Denpasar toward Gilimanuk, hugging Bali’s west coast. Once you clear the traffic of the south, the drive becomes part of the trip — rice fields, temple gates, black-sand river mouths, and glimpses of the very waves you’ll be surfing tomorrow. Balian rolls past on your left about half an hour before you arrive, which makes a tempting first stop if the swell is up.
Your transfer options
Private driver (what almost everyone does)
A pre-arranged car with a driver who knows where Medewi actually is — that last part matters more than you’d think, because ride-hailing apps thin out dramatically west of Tabanan. Fixed price, air-con, room for boardbags. If you book coaching or a stay with us, we arrange this for you and include the pickup; otherwise any reputable Bali transfer service will do the run.
Ride-hailing apps
Fine for getting around South Bali, unreliable for getting out of it. Drivers are often reluctant to take a 3-hour one-way fare, and you won’t find a ride back from Medewi on an app. If you use one, agree the full route up front.
Scooter
We love a scooter mission as much as anyone, but 90+ kilometres with a boardbag on the Denpasar–Gilimanuk road is not the adventure to start your trip with. Rent a scooter here instead — you’ll want one for the warungs and sunset missions anyway, and we can sort one out for you.
Timing your trip
- Leave early or leave late. The stretch through Denpasar and Tabanan is the slow part; early morning and mid-evening are the smoothest windows.
- Aim to arrive before dark. The coast road is unlit in stretches, and arriving with daylight left means you can get your bearings — or even squeeze in a sunset session.
- Add buffer on Fridays and holidays. Like everywhere on Bali, traffic swells when the weekend does.
Worth a stop on the way
If you’re not racing the sunset: Tanah Lot sits just off the route in Tabanan (go early to dodge the tour buses), and Balian Beach makes a great leg-stretch about 30 minutes from Medewi — check the live surf forecast and you might arrive already surfed-out and grinning.
Arriving in Medewi
Once you’re here, everything is walkable or a five-minute scooter ride: the point, the beaches of Yeh Sumbul, the warungs, the rice fields behind the village. The travel time is exactly why the lineup looks the way it does — most people won’t make the drive, and that’s fine by us. First time in the area? Our complete Medewi surf guide covers the wave, the rules and the village, and the season guide helps you pick your window.
Arrived with a few hours to spare and no swell? A perfect day in Medewi shows you how we would spend them.
Flight booked? Send us your dates and we’ll take care of the rest — pickup included for coaching guests.
