Medewi
Bali’s Longest Left-Hand Wave ↓
Medewi is a quiet fishing village on Bali’s south-west coast, far from the tourist crowds of Kuta and Canggu. It is famous for one of the longest left-hand waves in all of Bali — a 300-metre peeling point break that rewards every level of surfer. Here, rice fields meet the sea, fishing boats share the bay with longboards, and time moves at a pace that southern Bali has long forgotten.

A Left That Just Keeps Going
Medewi is a boulder-bottom point break that peels for over 300 metres on a good day. The smooth river-rock floor throws up consistent sections perfect for off-the-tops, drawn-out cutbacks and long cross-stepping trim lines. It’s Bali’s dream longboarding wave — unhurried, mechanical and deeply satisfying.
Unlike the heavy reef passes of the Bukit peninsula, Medewi is accessible and forgiving. The take-off zone is wide, the paddle-out is manageable, and the long ride back to the point gives you time to reflect on what just happened.
When & How to Surf Medewi
“On its day, Medewi is Bali’s longest wave — a 300-metre left that never stops giving.”— Local Surf Knowledge, West Bali

Where Is Medewi?
Medewi is in the Jembrana regency on Bali’s south-west coast, approximately 75 km north-west of Ngurah Rai Airport — a 2 to 2.5-hour drive depending on traffic. Head north-west through Tabanan past Balian Beach, then turn off at Jalan Pantai Medewi.
Staying at Disini Surfhouse in Yeh Sumbul puts you literally next to the break, with no early morning drives. You’re surrounded by rice fields and coconut groves, far from the tourist infrastructure of southern Bali.
A Wave for Every Surfer
Medewi’s long, mellow peel makes it one of the most inclusive surf destinations in Bali — from first-timers stepping off beach breaks to longboard masters seeking endless walls.
🏄 Beginners
The wide, gentle take-off and forgiving peel make Medewi perfect for progression. Far less intimidating than Kuta or Canggu, and far more rewarding. Great for building confidence on a real point break.
🏄♀ Intermediate Surfers
Long sections let you link multiple moves on a single wave — cutbacks, off-the-tops, floaters. The pace gives you time to think, adjust and really surf. Perfect for breaking through a plateau.
🏄♂ Longboarders
One of the finest longboarding waves in all of Indonesia. The mellow, peeling wall is made for nose-riding, elegant cross-stepping and those deep-carving trims that remind you why you surf.

Insider Tips for Medewi
Our team surfs Medewi every day. Here’s what makes the difference between a good session and a great one.
- Surf at dawn — the trade winds are offshore and the water is glassy before 9am.
- Higher tides clean up the wave and reduce barnacle hazards on the rock entry.
- Watch your footing: some boulders are sharper at low tide.
- Bring a longboard or mid-length if the swell is small — Medewi shines on 2–4 ft.
- Stay 3–5 nights rather than day-tripping — the wave rewards familiarity and patience.
- Explore nearby: uncrowded beach breaks and river bars that most tourists never find.
- Medewi fires best in S–SW swell — same forecasts you’d use for Uluwatu.
Getting to Medewi
Follow the main Denpasar–Gilimanuk highway north-west past Tabanan and Balian, then turn onto Jalan Pantai Medewi. There’s a small car park at the end; the point is directly in front of you.
By scooter: the highway has heavy truck traffic. Ride defensively. Staying at Disini eliminates the drive entirely.
Life in West Bali
Medewi moves to a different rhythm. No beach clubs, no tourist strips. Rice fields, fishing boats, a handful of warungs serving spectacular food, and waves that peel for as long as your legs carry you.
This is Bali before it became famous. The fact that it’s still this quiet, still this good — is one of the best-kept secrets in Indonesian surfing.
