One of the most common questions we get before a booking is simple: „When’s the best time to come?“ The honest answer for the Medewi area is that there’s good surf year-round — but each season has its own character. Here’s how the year breaks down on Bali’s west coast.
Dry season (roughly April to October)
This is Bali’s classic surf season. Consistent south and southwest swells march up from the Indian Ocean, and the trade winds tend to blow offshore on the west coast in the mornings. Expect the most reliable, cleanest conditions of the year. It’s also peak tourist season on the island, but one of Medewi’s gifts is that it stays far quieter than the south even in busy months.
Wet season (roughly November to March)
Don’t write off the wet season. Yes, there’s more rain — usually in short, warm afternoon bursts rather than all-day downpours — but the swells keep coming and the lineups get even emptier. Mornings are often beautiful, the water is warm, and prices across the island drop. For many of our returning guests, this is their favourite secret.
Month-by-month at a glance
- April–June: Swell building, fewer crowds than peak, excellent value. A real sweet spot.
- July–August: Peak season. Most consistent swell, busiest island-wide, still mellow at Medewi.
- September–October: Tail end of dry season, often clean and fun with thinning crowds.
- November–March: Wet season. Warm water, empty lineups, occasional rain, great deals.
So when should you book?
If you want the most consistent waves, aim for the dry season and consider the shoulder months (April–June, September–October) for the best mix of swell and space. If you love an empty lineup and don’t mind a passing shower, the wet season is genuinely underrated.
